The Marquise Brilliant is an elongated oval or boat shaped modified brilliant. A typical Marquise Brilliant contains 56 facets. It is generally agreed that a length-to-width ratio between 1.75:1 and 2:1 is most pleasing. The ultimate shape of the finished diamond is determined by the rough and what parameters it allows. An elongated shape with pointed ends inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France's Louis XIV, who wanted a diamond to match it. The name is derived from the Marquise of Pompadour, for whom King Louis XIV of France allegedly had a stone fashioned to resemble what he considered her perfectly shaped mouth. It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire or when enhanced by smaller diamonds.
The description of an Marquise Cut Diamond is: marquise or navette shape is like a long oval which has been stretched out to a point at each end. A marquise should have an aspect ratio of 2:1 for the classic boat shaped stone. They are most often seen as center diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings to balance the long, narrow shape. The diamond should be of the highest quality with regard to its color and clarity.
Many Square, Oblong or rectangular diamonds are 'step cut' which the cutting style is used for Marquise cut diamonds. The long, oval shape of a Marquise cut is therefore often referred to as 'Step cut' or 'Table cut'. The facets on a 'Step cut' are cut in steps. The crown, pavilion, and the table are all cut in rectangular facets. These diamonds are bright, clear and shiny in appearance as its facets usually span the length or width of the stone, the facets gradually decreasing as they approach the table.
Good marquise cut diamonds are effected by several different elements which have a large impact on a diamond's brilliance. These include the width and depth of the stone, the symmetry and the alignment of a diamond's facets and the polish. Diamond clarity is a measure of a diamond's blemishes and inclusions which also effect the brilliance of diamonds and their sparkle because they interfere with the passage of light travelling through the precious stone. The skill of the jeweller will ensure that marquise cut diamonds have a suitable cut to give the most beautiful results in respect of their lustre, transparency, refraction and dispersion of light. Aspect ratio of the marquise cut: The ideal ratio of length to width should be about twice the length as the stone is wide. (2:1 aspect ratio). Experts agree that the best length to width ration for this cut should be around 2:1.
Marquise diamond rings very populat during Victorian Era are often accented with additional diamonds in channels, prongs or paves along the band. A benefit of marquise cut diamonds is that they often appear to be larger than their true carat weight.
The football-shaped marquise diamonds are a modified brilliant-cut. Because marquise diamonds are long and narrow, they can
also create the illusion of greater size. Carat for carat, the marquise diamond
has one of the largest crown surface areas of any diamond shape, making it a
good choice when trying to maximize the perceived size of a diamond. Like the
oval diamond, the marquise cut diamond's elongated shape can make the finger of
the wearer appear longer and slimmer. A marquise cut diamond rings
are navette shaped that contains 56 facets. The bowtie effect is typical for this shape, so it is very critical to choose a marquise diamond that is cut well and has intense fire and sparkle. This cut is an adaptation of the traditional standard brilliant, except that the bezel facet point on the crown. This cut style is usually referred to as the “French Tip.” Also, the marquise cut diamond ring can have anywhere from four to eight main facets on the pavilion. The depth should be at least 56% and the table at least 50%. If you want the stone to appear huge, then the marquise cut diamond ring is the perfect choice, as it has a large surface area for its carat weight and you get more bang for your money.
Personal preference should dictate how narrow or fat of a marquise diamond
you choose, although a length to width ratio of 1.75 -2.15
is considered the classic marquise cut. Every Lumera Diamond includes precise measurements, as well as the length to width
ratio, so you know the exact shape of the marquise cut diamond you are
considering.
Symmetry is very important in marquise cuts. The two end points should align
with each other, and the right and left sides should form a near mirror image.
Even a slight misalignment in the points can result in an off kilter look in the
final setting. For this reason, excellent or very good symmetry is strongly
recommended.
The traditional properties closely associated with diamonds are action, passion, and energy.
