Olivine:
Olivine has got the chemical formula (Mg, Fe)2[SiO4] and so it is a
silicate. It has got a hardness of 6.5 to 7 and it crystallizes in
the rhombical system. The density is between 3.27 g/cm3 and 4.20
g/cm3 and the reason for this big difference is that the parts of
magnesium and iron differ. Other names for olivine are peridot and
chrysolite. Olivine is green. In nature olivine can be found in form
of crystals or in form of irregular pieces. The crystals are often
wide and short. Mostly olivine is transparent. Jewels are made of
good olivines. Olivines can be found in Burma, in Egypt, in Brazil,
in the Czech Republic and on the Canary Islands.
