More than 500
people gathered at a jewelry industry event held over the weekend in
Mumbai, India, to mourn those lost in the terrorist attack.
Mumbai,
India--India's leading jewelry-industry associations are banding
together to help the families of those killed or injured in the
Mumbai terrorist attack last week.
The Gem and
Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), together with the Bharat
Diamond Bourse, Mumbai Diamond Merchant's Association and the Diamond
Exporter's Association Limited, are using the industry charitable
trust, the Gem and Jewellery National Relief Foundation, to collect
Rs. 50 lakhs (about $5 million) for those affected by the attacks.
Speaking on
behalf of the industry, GJEPC Chairman Vasant Mehta said, "I
strongly condemn this cowardly act of terrorism in Mumbai and salute
the brave officers who have sacrificed their lives to help us
overcome this crisis. The industry's thoughts and prayers are with
the families of victims; may they find the strength to overcome their
monumental loss."
On Nov. 29,
the industry offered condolences and prayers to the attack victims
during a ceremony held at Prasad Chambers in Mumbai. More than 500
people observed a moment of silence for those lost in the attacks.
Hundreds were
killed and injured in the attacks, which took place in various places
around Mumbai--including a train station, two five-star hotels and a
Jewish center--beginning the night of Nov. 26.

KERRVILLE,
Texas - (Business Wire) James Avery, a family-owned jewelry retailer,
announces today the unveiling of the White House Christmas Tree
Ornament designed by Mr. James Avery, founder and chairman emeritus
of James Avery Craftsman, Inc. The ornament was unveiled at the White
House on December 4, 2008.
The invitation
to design an original ornament for the White House came from Texas
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. This Christmas marks the first year of
the Bush administration that Senators and Congressmen were given the
chance to select an artist from their represented state.
With
instructions and a plain, silver ornament from the White House, Mr.
Avery worked for several months creating the design for his ornament.
The completed, hand-painted ornament artistically represents Texas in
all of its rich beauty and heritage -- the Texas flag waving proudly
over the Alamo representing the lives lost and freedom won; a
Longhorn steer symbolizing the states ranching heritage; a
gushing oil well to show the new way of life it brought to the state;
and a red-ribbon wrapped Texas, representing the precious treasure
that is the states history, both past and present.
It is
indeed an honor that I was given this wonderful opportunity by
Senator Hutchison to, in a small way, represent the great state of
Texas, said Mr. Avery.
His ornament
will also be featured on Sen. Hutchisons Christmas cards this
holiday season.
